When American, Paris-based fashion designer Rick Owens first met his wife, Michele Lamy, more than twenty years ago, he was employed as a pattern maker in the design company she owned and ran in Los Angeles. In 2008, in a definitive New Yorker profile, he described her as “a mesmerising sphinx. I’m so fascinated by someone who acts completely on instinct and feelings. The coolest thing you’ll watch all day. Or week. Or all year. Trust.

MARTIN GREENFIELD | LESSONS FROM A TAILOR

MARTIN GREENFIELD | LESSONS FROM A TAILOR

“Lessons From a Tailor” is a portrait of a Holocaust survivor who learned the art of tailoring while imprisoned in a concentration camp. After being liberated and emigrating to America, Martin Greenfield rose from floor boy, to manager, to owner of a factory producing custom suits in Brooklyn, NY. Along the way he made suits for celebrities, power brokers, and heads of state, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton. He now provides jobs for hundreds of working class people, most of them immigrants, and produces top-quality clothing the old-fashioned way. This film tells his story, and offers a glimpse inside one of the few remaining hand-made suit factories in the world.

JURGEN BEY | PRODUCT DESIGN

JURGEN BEY | PRODUCT DESIGN

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. Happy 2012 to all my readers!!! I wish that this New Year 2012 will bring smiles in your faces and forget all your bad memories of 2011. I wish that this 2012 will bring you more happiness, 365 days of success, good Health, good Luck and joyness in your life.

People to watch out for in 2012? You better watch out for Dutch designer, Jurgen Bey, who began his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven between 1984-1989 and subsequently taught there for six years next to running his own designstudio. Bey soon attracted media attention through his early collaborative projects within the Droog collective such as Treetrunk Bench (1999) and Gardening Bench (1999) – works that catapulted the designer onto the world stage. In 2002 Bey set up ‘Studio Makkink & Bey together with Architect Rianne Makkink. Bey’s work is often mistakenly aligned with a rigorous environmental agenda due to his interest in using recycled or ‘found’ objects. However, the designer explains that he doesn’t set out to investigate environmentally sensitive solutions through his work. Instead, his interest lies in pursuing a ‘layered’ and conceptual approach to design and discovering delight in the hidden qualities of the world we live within. Truly Inspirational stuff.

JASON LAST | FASHION FILMS

JASON LAST | FASHION FILMS

Jason Last was one of the first filmmakers who dedicated his directorial craft solely to the genre of fashion and in doing so helped initiate the genre we now call “Fashion Film”. Educated in fine art, Last has always preferred capturing a moving image behind a camera to capturing a still image on canvas. In an industry dominated by the stealth power of the photographic medium, Last chooses to focus on movement and creates beautiful and captivating films that have featured collections of the likes of Comme des Garçons, Rodarte, Maison Martin Margiela, Emanuel Ungaro, Complex Geometries and Diane Pernet.

A YEAR IN NEW YORK | ANDREW CLANCY

A YEAR IN NEW YORK | ANDREW CLANCY

NEW YORK is really the city that never sleeps. It is the cross section of all nationalities, businesses, arts and culture. The city is abuzz with activity and the energy is forever flowing. Andrew Clancy put together a wonderful video called A Year In New York featuring various footage of life in the big apple. He edited all the great footage and created a wonderful clip that seems to be made just for James Vincent McMorrow’s inspirational song, “We Don’t Eat”. With this video I now know why visitors just can’t seem to have enough of New York and why New Yorkers love New York!!!

THE MONEY FIX | DOCUMENTARY

THE MONEY FIX | DOCUMENTARY

Does money make the world go round? That’s the one that everybody knows. Money is a tool to help people live a qualitative better life. Is it possible that what a society chooses as it money can effect the behavior of it’s people?

THE MONEY FIX is a feature-length documentary exploring our society’s relationship with the almighty dollar. THE MONEY FIX examines economic patterning in both the human and the natural worlds, and through this lens we learn how we can empower ourselves by redesigning the lifeblood of the economy at the community level. The film documents three types of alternative money systems, all of which help solve economic problems for the communities in which they operate.

GEORGE CONDO | MODERN MASTER

GEORGE CONDO | MODERN MASTER

The American artist George Condo was born in New Hampshire. He studied art history and music theory at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and has gained a prominent position in the art world over the past three decades. Condo’s work has been shown in the Netherlands only once before: in 1985 at Galerie ’t Venster in Rotterdam. He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York) and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo). The works of George Condo are like a beautiful homage to Picasso’s surrealists work in the thirties, but in a really playful way. It´s hard to talk about George Condo these days without mentioning Kanye. For Kanye’s latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, George Condo painted five different album covers. In my eyes, they were a perfect collaboration of two extraordinary artists. These album covers, alone, are essentially just art pieces—but they were created and packaged as mass communication. They are the identity for global merchandise, regardless of the medium or lack of typography. It’s graphic design, by association, and I’m completely envious of that.

This travelling exhibition has been organised in partnership with the Hayward Gallery in London. Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands should visit this exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam until Sunday 25th of September 2011.

Entrance fees

€ 10: Full rate
€   7,50: CJP holders
€   7,50: Groups (minimum 15 people with advance booking)
€   5: Students

Free entrance on Wednesdays and for persons up to 18 years of age, Friends of the Museum, ICOM Card and Museum Card holders.

10 MEN | IN ONE MINUTE

10 MEN | IN ONE MINUTE

Everyone should check out the latest issue of 10 Men Magazine Winter Preview. 10 Men is a magazine containing men’s fashion, articles, great photography and reviews. It’s definitely one of my favourite magazines in the world so far. After reading so many magazines every month, it is only natural we develop our own preferences. And I must admit I’m quite a magazine junkie. I started off of course with Dutch magazines but those magazines bore me a lot, and it takes a lot to bore me. I ended up on picking up lots of magazines to read to only 3 great magazines to pick from named Inventory magazine, Workwear and 10 MEN magazine. I consider these magazines as the basics of all new and old topics on fashion, lifestyle and art. Anyone wanting to know about this ought to have a look to these wonderful magazines. I also really really love the cover of the latest issue of 10 Men. I always feel that magazines should produce covers that would entice people to pick it up to have a read, as well as making the readers want that piece of clothing on the cover. For a proper good look you’ll have to go out and buy it, definitely worth checking out!!!

PABLO PICASSO | MODERN MASTER

PABLO PICASSO | MODERN MASTER

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a famous Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor who lived most of his adult life in France; he is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most popular works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), his portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Still, after watching this old video from the Golden Girls- an old American sitcom about four previously married women, it makes you wonder if the story about Tête de Femme”, what actually means “Head of a Woman” in French is true. If it makes you wonder, it’s Not A Shame!!! It’s worth checking out the work of Pablo Picasso, even if you’re not much of an art-lover you will fall in love with his creations. On a side note, the painting of Pablo Picasso’s Tête de Femme is a portrait of the artist’s second wife, Jacqueline.

ARTIFACT DESIGN | DECADES

ARTIFACT DESIGN | DECADES

Artifact Design is an award-winning 2D and 3D design studio based in Atlanta and LA. They originally made this video as a part of a commercial spot about hamburgers throughout recent American history. However, the potential also existed for the set to be the stage for a visual exploration in lighting, composition, and cinematography. So the assets were repurposed to try and achieve that goal. I’m pretty sure I was born in the wrong decade but stuff like this makes it bearable. The end result is a very nice retro piece detailing the styles of the 50′s 60′s and 70′s, I love it!!!!

RICARDO TISCI | GIVENCHY COUTURE FALL 2011

RICARDO TISCI | GIVENCHY COUTURE FALL 2011

Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci represents to me a particular class of designers whose intricate visionary masterpieces defy the real world so utterly that they can sometimes scarcely be called clothes at all. In the mind’s eye of the designer and the hands of his atelier craftspeople, a world within a world is created – a symbolic landscape where the subconscious sweeps through with all the force of a hurricane. For this collection, Riccardo Tisci has taken inspiration from the bird of paradise – both the mythical animal and the flower. The dresses are airy and structured and make use of angelic colours and light materials. The thick plastic zippers, strategically-placed sheer cutouts and calculated overabundance of embellishments ensured that the pure intentions were tempered by a pinch of beauteous transgression: the hallmark of a tried-and-true Radical Perfectionist.
